i think winter is here...dang... i guess it does have it's upsides.....

getting all cozy with a good book--My problem, is that when i get into a book i really like, it's all consuming! and then i read it so fast, that i am sad when i finish. i never learn although---it's a vicious cycle. I am sort of excited about the list of books i have to read~
i know i mentioned that i really liked the book Matched, well the sequel Crossed just came out. I am about 6 chapters in, and getting back in with Ky & Cassia. Good stuff.

You know Winter = shopping--it's sort of a love/hate thing. I hate all the crowds and crap like that during the holidays--but i sure do love the fun atmosphere... and shopping...i am thrilled that H&M and Crate and Barrel are opening for our shopping pleasure--11/11 is the date peeps. I don't know that i will hit them just yet--since it will be insane in the membrane busy, but the possibility of going sometime soon is grand.
speaking of shopping, i found some great OPI nail polish that i am really digging. I seem to paint my nails more in the colder months,..not sure why....

my favorite is called chop-sticking to my story-It's a rich, orangey, carmel brown--so pretty.
No, i didn't take picts of my painted nails--grabbed these off OPI:)

and these two lovelies--the first is-Over the Taupe, and then the second- You don't know jacques-a pretty warm grey

and then there is Winter Running...

{here}
what in the world? no! i don't do winter running like these crazy heads--no strollers involved, and clothing is a must....
A couple of you asked about winter running. I do train in the winter, and hit the pavement as much as possible. But, I am on the treadmill more in the winter, and will do speed work, and intervals on the treadmill...so i don't go insane...:) What helps me to get out the door for a winter run---besides friends... is layers...and the promise of hot chocolate and bagels afterwards.
Keeping the cold at bay! You want to be warm without sweating so much you get a chill." The rule of thumb is to dress as if it is 20 degrees warmer." Ya--i am not so good at this---i wear a ton of layers just to get me out of the door, and without fail always end up dropping crap a few miles in..:) Do what works best for you, and gets you going. For the top half {depending on the temp} 1 to 2 layers is great. The layers trap the heat, but be sure you are sporting technical fabrics that wicks away the moisture and keeps you dry--it should be DryFit, Thinsulate, Thermax,Coolmax, or polypropylene---avoid cotton; it holds moisture and will eventually start to chill you. The layer closest to the body should be fitted--that second layer is looser and can be more insulating. You can then top it off with a good jacket that has some ventilation, with zippers at the neck and pit area to vent air as you heat up. It is always good if it is also waterproof, and blocks the wind. On the Bottom--just running tights or pants-- the legs are working hard and keep warm. They have some great running tights at nike, and also they have a good line of compression workout apparel at ON
A Headlamp or light and reflective clothing is always a good idea for safety in the darker hours~
Be sure to change clothes quickly post run--you will get chilled in no time flat---well, if you sweat profusely like me. I like bring a change of clothes if we are grabbing some breakfast or something after a long run---

old navy compression tights, nike long sleeve shirt, and Nike Rip Stop running Jacket. PS-I tend to find a lot of Nike, Brooks, and Ascics running gear at TJ Maxx-for killer prices-so be sure to check it out.

Ya, it sucks rocks to get out of your warm bed and go out into the cold, but after a mile or so--it is actually pretty great~ I love running on a fresh blanket of snow--it is so tranquil--and beautiful.Winter running definitely has it's charm~Heading out when it just starting to snow, and it is so quiet you can hear the snow fall--fantastical. Anyhoo-- Just try it, and you will know what i mean. Is this where i am supposed to say--Just do it??
{ps--going to start doing some running posts on things y'all asked--speed and interval training next}

Loving this post! Those nail polish colors are awesome!! Love them for fall.
Wow you are a dedicated runner...but I could definitely see how peaceful it could be to run in the snow. I love those OPI colors too...I'm due for a mani/pedi!
OK girl...after reading this post, you actually had me interested in winter running...thank goodness that thought passed quickly! Ha! I am a treadmill runner in the winter. Cold, yuck days...I run just to warm up...and doggonit...it really does spark your body mentally and physically! Love your "winter" nails....I'm on a gray kick right now! And holiday shopping....not a fan. Don't like seeking out the "perfect" gift. What's great? When the perfect gift seeks you out...just jumps out at you! Can't believe we are talking holidays already! Enjoy your day!
thanks sharstin! i love running in the winter- i seem to be able to go a lot longer in the cold than in the hot summer. i'm excited for your upcoming running posts!
Shar! I can't believe you posted this bc JUST this morning I was thinking, "I'm going to email Sharstin and ask her some tips on running outside when it's cold" and here is this post! HA! I just started doing that Couch to 5K program a couple weeks ago, so I am still walking/jogging combo every other day, but today was the first day I did it in my basement on the treadmill and it was NOT as nice and running outside. What do you put on your face/mouth when you run outside? I'm getting a sore throat and I'm not sure if I'm getting sick or if it is just from the cold the last few days...anyway, thanks for the tips! Helps me stay motivated!!! I love TJmaxx for workout gear as well!
One more question. Shoes. What kind do you wear in the winter for traction?? Cuz up where I live we tend to have plenty of snow covered roads (no sidewalks) and Ice! I don't want to bust my face!
Great ideas! I might need to pick me up some nail polish. We should make a girls trip down to H&M. We can handle the crowds! We'll just wear our football pads and plow through. :)
V-lets do it!-sans kids we can tackle the crowds for sure!
I NEEEED to read crossed!
And I love this... I've been trying to figure out how I'm going to get my lazy bum out the door to run this winter. I'm from St George so these northern Utah winters are REALLY killing me! Thanks for the advice :)
Oh, i'd much rather run in the cold than too hot. Love those peaceful crisp snowy mornings~ and ya, contemplating the best time to make a trip to SL~ so so! excited:)
just noticed veronica's football pad comment~ awesome! i'm down:)
You are one inspiring woman!! Btw, after looking at this post and those amazing nail polish colors...I'm going to the mall right when it opens =)))
Yay good book recs, thanks! So fun for the new stores- can't wait- see ya there, ha ha!! Winter running is surprisingly nice isn't it, I have been missing it this fall. :( I shouldn't have stopped this summer! I know you will enjoy it for all of us!! :)
Oh, I LOVE a good run in the snow! Your description made me a wee bit excited for winter! I once ran a half marathon in an ice storm and it was the most fun!
Excited to read your training posts! Thanks for the good tips!
you are way more motivated than me! i stay inside on the treadmill as soon as it gets below 50 :)
Great post & pictures! As always!
I'm so jealous you have an H&M opening up! The closest one to me is, well, not close at all! :) And I am the exact same way about a good book- consumed!
I have never heard of those books...I will have to give them a read! I too am excited for H&M - it will be fun to have one nearby.
Great post on running. You know I am such a wimp when it comes to running in the cold. I just can't get the motivation to do it. But MAYBE if I had the right clothing I could do it...:)
PS I am excited about your next post on tips for running....I would really like to up my pace a bit for the Ogden Half!
I loved the first book! I just saw the second at Costco this weekend. i gotta get on that. And I too can't wait for H&M and Crate & Barrell. It's going to mania there for a while, well...probably till after Christmas. Holiday season brings in the crowds!
Good info on running in the cold. I just tried out my first week of bundling up. I stayed warm during the runs but my throat felt stripped from the cold. Maybe this doesn't happen to you but out of shape me was gasping for air. Any tricks you know of?
can't wait for H&M and Crate&Barrel to open and I don't even live in utah! :) it will be nice for when I visit though! :)
I love winter shopping too. The crowds are crazy, but the atmosphere gets me every time! And I'm so excited for your H&M!
And as far as running goes, you're a rock star! I can't even bring myself to run under the perfect conditions.
wish i had the motivation to go running at all, really. oh well. i really like this post and am super jealous that h&m is opening near you. :( boo, we are so behind in hawaii. we just got a bath and body works, haha. love your nail polish color!
I've been running the past few mornings and it's been cold....47 degrees..hehe!! No snow here..EVER!!!!
Loving the nail picks:) OPI is the best.
I'm with you on winter running. Layers get me through it totally & maybe the incentive of something warm and tasty when I get home.
Love the winter running tips! Thank you so much for posting this. Since i'm a beginner runner, this helps me out a ton.
First, I need to read that book...I hope it doesn't disappoint!
Second, I always paint by nails more in the cold months too. I think it has something to do with boredom...for me at least.
Lastly, I love gift shopping, but HATE the Christmas Craziness that comes out in people. I honestly probably won't head down to H&M until February!!
Who is that man running in the snow with no clothes on.. you kidding me? I know what you mean about running in the snow, I think it's so beautiful and peaceful. I have fond memories of our Christmas eve runs growing up =)
Lots of good stuff here. I am not a runner, but I love reading in the snow. Well...inside, with my fire and my hot cocoa. :)
Can't wait to read Crossed. Except I have heard it is a bit of a "middle" book. Nevertheless, read it I will.
Yeah on Crossed. I am glad you posted because I completely forgot about Matched altogether. I will get it, and probably finish it, tommorrow.
omgosh. jaques is my absolute fave nail polish. you have to say it in a french accent.
You are a stud! I can't take that super cold air down my throat! ugh! Maybe some day I will love running. =) For now I am trying to stick to my body pump. Hugs friend! Have a great weekend!
you are a rockstar. there is no running outside in the winter in chicago. at least not for me.
I have been hearing great things about Crossed. I gotta read it! Love that nail color, it is seriously the essence of fall!
Holy cow, your amazing. I can't even run in the warm let alone the snow.
Went to the mall this morning to check out the new stores - hm didn't open until noon which was lame and there were a million people waitng in line to get in. I'm not that crazy :) maybe in a few weeks I'll be able to get in the store.
Amiee~ so you can get some trail shoes that have more traction for winter running, and then there are these neck and face dri fit neck shields that would work to cover your neck and mouth.
I just read Matched and LOVED it -- can't wait to read the next one!
I am with you I just finished Tiger's Curse way too fast and now I'm sad it's over. I will have to read those that you just suggested. I am hooked lately to reading:)
Always happy to learn about new books--must check those out. Love the nail colors!
I'm always looking for new books! Can't wait to try these out. And I also get so sad after finishing a good book, but I've been lucky with some good ones lately!
Oh, and I adore that nail polish shades!! So glam. xo
